I am starting an email list basically from zero and I want to do it cleanly. The issues are what to actually offer so people hand over an address, keeping the list warm instead of letting it rot, and not getting my sending domain nuked for being in an adult adjacent space. For those who built a list from nothing in this niche, what is your actual setup, what lead magnet did people actually sign up for, do you handle sending yourself or push it to a provider, and how do you keep it boring for deliverability.
Offer something they can use the same day, not a someday newsletter, that removes the why would I sign up problem entirely and it is the single biggest thing. A tight checklist or a template they actually open beats a vague updates promise. For sending, use a reputable provider and warm the domain slowly, that pairing is what keeps you out of the spam folder. Push the fancy automation decision for later, you do not want to be tuning funnels before you have a list.
plus one on a same day useful magnet. also pick a provider that will not ban you the moment they see the niche, plenty quietly drop adult adjacent senders, so read their policy before you build on them. and confirm each new signup with a real double opt in, a list full of fake or mistyped addresses tanks your deliverability and theres no undo once youre flagged
the warm the domain slowly part is exactly the thing I was overcomplicating, I was about to blast the whole list day one. and agreed on not building funnels yet. do you re engage the people who never open anywhere or is a simple clean out of the dead addresses enough for your setup
A clean double opt in plus an honest unsubscribe in every send is generally enough, but keep a record of where and when each person opted in. The deliverability mess usually comes not from the content itself but from unclear consent about who agreed to what. Document how they joined and the rest is just list hygiene.
for my audience in places english is second language the short useful thing work best, long email they dont read. one warning, some provider they see the words and close your account no explain. i make small test first with cheap plan before i move whole list there. the collecting emails is easy part, keeping the account alive after is the hard part
the lead magnet that worked for me wasnt free content, it was access. a little members only corner or an early look at new stuff. free clips attract freebie hunters who never buy. early access attracts the people already inclined to pay, so the list converts way better even if it grows slower. match the magnet to the buyer not to the biggest crowd.
the lead magnet question is the one everyone gets stuck on and its usually the wrong one to lead with. what gets the signup matters far less than what you send in the first week. ive watched great magnets feed lists that rotted in a month because nobody planned email two through five. before you worry about the giveaway, write the first three emails youll send and make them genuinely worth opening. the magnet fills the list, the early sequence decides whether any of those addresses ever open a second time.
Erin is right and it took me years to learn it. When i gave away content people took it and left. When i gave away access, a members only room, early notice before a drop, a reply address that actually reaches me, they stayed, because leaving meant losing the relationship and not just a file. Give them somewhere to belong, not something to download. The download is forgettable, the room isnt.
