i run a few tube sites in related niches and a lot of the same videos live on more than one of them. the descriptions and titles overlap heavy. question for the seo crowd: does google actually penalize this cross-site duplication when it is all my own network, or does it just pick one url to rank and ignore the rest? i do not want to rewrite thousands of descriptions if the only downside is that one site wins and the others get filtered.
it’s not a penalty in the manual-action sense, it’s filtering. google just picks one as canonical and the rest sit there not ranking, so you end up competing with yourself for nothing. the cost isn’t a hit to your account, it’s wasted crawl budget and rankings you cannibalized.
you don’t have to rewrite all of them, just differentiate the ones you actually want ranking. pick the primary site per video, make that page the fullest and best, let the rest stay thin. don’t smear the same effort over five clones and expect five rankings out of it.
competing with yourself is the cost nobody counts. i’ve seen networks where site b outranks site a on the owner’s own money keyword because they never decided which one was primary. pick a winner per cluster and point everything at it.
this is the one that worked for me. i templated a unique intro per site off the per-page data and let the tail pages stay duplicate. only the money pages got real attention and the rankings mostly sorted themselves out after that.
you cannot rewrite everything, that is impossible job. across a network of related tubes the same video live in many place, so you pick per video the one site you want to rank it on. that one gets the real unique text, the duplicates you canonical or just leave thin. you are not trying to make every copy win, you pick one winner per video and stop fighting yourself.
measure which duplicates are actually cannibalizing before you touch anything, because not all of it matters. the real cost is two of your own pages fighting for the same query and splitting the traffic so neither ranks, not some abstract duplicate-content penalty. pages that overlap but never competed for the same terms are mostly harmless. find the queries where you are competing with yourself and consolidate or differentiate those specifically.
right, you can’t make a whole network genuinely unique, so pick the pages that actually need to rank and put the real work there. the rest you canonical or noindex and stop worrying about. differentiate everything and you’re spread too thin, differentiate nothing and google picks your winner for you, usually not the one you’d have chosen.
the decision is per video, not per whole site, that is the right level. for each video you decide which property is the home that should rank, and the copies elsewhere you handle accordingly, canonical tag, differentiate, or just accept they will not compete. a blanket network-wide rule is too coarse. the duplication only becomes a problem when you never decided which copy is supposed to win, so decide it per piece and signal it clear.
yes, you cannot make whole network unique, is not realistic. so you put the work on pages you want to rank, and the rest you handle with canonical or noindex. most pages in a network do not matter enough on their own to spend the time. choose where to fight.
the right handling is different for each piece, which is why a blanket rule does not work. some videos are worth unique treatment across the network, others you just canonical down to one version and move on. a single rule either over-works the stuff that should be consolidated or under-works the stuff that should be unique. deciding per video which one it is matches the handling to the content instead of forcing everything through the same gate.
honestly whether the duplication helps or hurts you is something you measure, not argue. look at how the duplicated pages are actually doing in your own data instead of debating the general rule. networks differ.
is true, you cannot make every copy in a network unique. so you differentiate only the pages you want to rank and let the rest stay duplicate. put the work where it decides a ranking, not everywhere.
duplicate content across your own network is mostly a self-inflicted wound from grabbers auto-publishing the same clips to every site. canonical where it makes sense, but really the fix is upstream, dedupe on the way in so the same video does not land on three of your sites raw. google is not confused about which is original if only one has it.
