Paying models in crypto, how are you handling the volatility and fees

More of my models are asking to be paid in crypto, mostly the ones in regions where the usual payout rails are painful. I am fine to offer it but I want to set it up so I am not eating wild swings between when I owe them and when it settles, and so the network fees do not quietly become my problem on small payouts.

For those already doing this, do you quote in fiat and convert at payout time, hold a float, use stablecoins only? And how do you keep the fee side sane on frequent small payouts.

Stablecoins for payouts, full stop. Paying a model in a volatile coin means half your support tickets become arguments about what the rate was at what minute. Quote in fiat, settle in a stablecoin, and the amount they expect is the amount they get. The volatility question mostly disappears.

on the fee side, batch your payouts. frequent small transfers get eaten by per transaction fees, so a weekly batch on a low fee network beats paying out every day. also pick the network deliberately, the same stablecoin on a cheap chain versus an expensive one is night and day on fees

do not skip the record keeping just because it is crypto. you still need a clean log of what you paid, to whom, at what fiat value on the day, for your own books and for tax. the people who treat crypto payouts as off the books informal money create a mess for themselves later

seconding the fiat value at time of payout record. in a lot of places the conversion event itself is taxable to you, and the model has their own reporting duty wherever they are. you are not their accountant, but logging the fiat equivalent per payout protects you and makes their life possible too

One caution, know your exposure if a model later claims they were paid for something that violates a rule, crypto does not remove your obligation to know who you are paying. Keep the same identity and records standard you would for any payout rail. Anonymous crypto payouts to performers is a trap.

We pay our models in crypto since long time because bank way is too slow for them. Stablecoin only, like the others say, nobody want argue about the price next morning. One thing from studio side, let the model choose the network, some of them pay high fee on wrong chain and then blame you. We send small test amount first time with every new model, confirm they receive, then normal payout after. Sorry for english.

Risk angle nobody has raised yet, keep the payout wallet separate from anything touching your card processing and operating cash. If an off-ramp or an exchange account gets frozen during a review, you do not want that same pool of funds being the money you need to pay bills that week. Treat the crypto payout rail as its own isolated bucket with its own float. Boring, but it is the difference between an inconvenience and an emergency.

This is the detail I was missing, thank you. Going with stablecoin, a small first test transfer per model, and a weekly batch to keep the fees sane. And yes letting them pick the network, but writing down which one they chose so the next payout is not a fresh argument every time.
