been lurking a while and one thing i keep thinking about - when someone totally new lands here, the Getting Started board is right there but its easy to miss. could we get a little “new to the industry? start here” link near the top, or pin one thread as the obvious front door? not a big deal, just would save the newbies asking the same three questions in Main Forum every week. ![]()
that is the whole case for a start-here link right there. the material is already written, new people just have no way to know it exists, and telling them to go dig out the pinned roadmap assumes they know it is there. cheapest fix a forum can make.
After years of watching people arrive and bounce, the pattern is always the same. The newcomer who finds the roadmap in the first few minutes sticks, the one who lands in a random thread and feels lost drifts off. A clear start-here link costs almost nothing and it catches people right at the moment they are deciding whether this place is worth their time. That is about the cheapest retention lever a community has.
the first few minutes decide whether someone sticks around, and that is exactly when the good threads are invisible to them. a start-here link catches them right then. a lot of lurkers were one decent first impression away from staying.
this was me not that long ago. i wandered around for a while before i realized there was a whole getting-started section with exactly what i needed, and in that wandering window i nearly decided the place was not for me. the content being there does not help if a new person cannot find it from where they land. put a start-here pointer right where people arrive and you keep the confused newcomers who currently bounce before they find it.
it is a retention thing more than a tidiness thing. the people who bounce in the first session are mostly the ones who never found the on-ramp. fix it once and it keeps working every time a new person shows up.
same for me, i am not long past it myself. i wandered around a while before i found the getting-started section that had what i needed, and during that window i genuinely almost decided the place was not for me. so from pretty recent memory the start-here idea is a good one. the material being there does nothing if a new person cannot see it from where they land, and a pointer right at the entrance would have been the difference between me staying and leaving in those first few minutes.
and it is nearly free to try, a pinned link or one line in the header. if it bumps first-session retention even slightly it has already paid for itself. hard to see the downside.
a resource nobody can find might as well not exist. the fix is almost never build a new thing, it is putting what you already have where people are actually looking. pure placement, basically no cost.
